Jacqueline Green Miller Teaches How to Harness Turnout, Length, and Connection Through Plié to Passé and Beyond

Former Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater principal dancer Jacqueline Green Miller grew up as a self-described bunhead. When Ailey collaborated with The Royal Ballet for a series of performances during her career, she was excited to take class with the British company and see the ballerinas shine in all of their classically trained glory. What she was surprised to see was a focus on the basics:  “Even in that room, I remember seeing some of the principal dancers get corrected on a simple passé before the teacher even talked about pirouettes.” Having begun her dance training at the Baltimore School […]

Breaking Down the Different Kinds of High School Dance Teams

Breaking Down the Different Kinds of High School Dance Teams

What’s the difference between dance team and pom team? Drill and majorette? Step, song, and color guard? Each kind of team is found in high schools all across the U.S. (and even beyond). But not every school has every kind, and genres can differ based on culture and geography. There are also overlaps in elements like choreography, props, and venues, and “dance team” is even considered a category of its own within the larger umbrella of high school dance groups. To provide some clarity, Dance Spirit spoke with coaches and dancers from some of the most popular kinds of high […]

How the National Dance Institute’s DREAM Project Creates Inclusive Dance Programming for Students With and Without Disabilities

New York City’s National Dance Institute dates back to 1976, when Jacques d’Amboise founded it during his final years as a principal with New York City Ballet. d’Amboise recognized the transformational impact dance education had on his life and wanted every child to have the same opportunities. “When he said ‘every child,’ he meant every child,” says NDI artistic director Kay Gayner, noting how the Institute’s initial programming included dancers who were blind, were deaf or hard of hearing, or used wheelchairs.  Photo by Eduardo Patino, courtesy NDI. This season, NDI is celebrating 50 years and has reached over two […]

2025 Red Bull Dance Your Style Winner Jaïra Joy on Hip Hop and Girl Power

At Red Bull Dance Your Style, the crowd decides everything. This year it had one thing to say: Jaïra Joy. At the 2025 World Final, 18-year-old Jaïra Joy became the second woman in history to take home the title of Dance Your Style Champion. Even better, her win followed an all-female tie-breaker round between Joy and 2023 champion Waackxxxy. Held in Los Angeles, California, on October 11, the competition housed over 10 thousand audience members cheering on the 16 competitors (eight pre-final winners and eight invited wildcards). Like many of her fellow dancers, the Netherlands-born Joy traveled across the world […]

How to Work With Parent Volunteers

It may look like magic, but it takes a lot of sweat and many hands to mount a studio’s Nutcracker production. The same goes for putting on any recital or performance, running a competition team, and keeping a dance school humming day to day. Beyond the students, teachers, staff, and leadership, there’s often a stable of parent volunteers who help make it all possible.  “There are so many things that wouldn’t happen in our studio without them,” says Traci Broman, who bought Village Dance Studio in Whitestown, Indiana, from her mother almost a decade ago.  Dance Teacher talked with Broman […]
